Walker Prep’s Master List of SAT and ACT Contrast Transitions
Increase Your Test Score with My Comprehensive Guide to Contrast Transitions for the SAT, Digital SAT, and ACT. Includes 39 Essential Contrast Transitions with Example Sentences.
Below, I've compiled a master list of 39 essential SAT and ACT contrast transitions to help students ace ACT and SAT Transition Questions. After the master list, you will find example sentences for all 39 transitions, in the same order.
Transition Questions on the SAT, dSAT, and ACT
Sentence Transition Questions appear frequently on both the ACT and SAT. On the Writing Section of the digital SAT, you’ll encounter approximately 3 to 4 Transition Questions per module, making it the most common question type.
These questions are treated nearly identically on the paper-based SAT Writing and Language Test, the digital SAT Reading and Writing Test, and the ACT English test. Fundamentally, the strategies and tactics for solving them are identical. Thus, the below master list and corresponding example sentences are helpful for all three exams.
One major key to mastering SAT and ACT Transition Questions is to memorize which transitions belong to which categories.

While memorizing the transition lists is crucial for test prep success, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. To fully conquer this question type and achieve the highest score possible, you’ll also need to study the strategies and tactics that I’ve developed as part of my proven system.
Another key element of effective prep is practice. To gain mastering using my expertly-crafted Transition Question drills and detailed answer explanations, click here. To explore Sentence Transition Questions on official exams, visit the Self Prep section. You'll find a Question Type Inventory (QTI) for the tests in the Official ACT Prep Guide, the Official SAT Study Guide, and the Digital SAT Bluebook.
Prioritize Your Prep
To help you make the most of your limited prep time, I've divided the below list into three sub-lists, based on the frequency with which the contrast transitions are used. I recommend focusing on memorizing the most frequently used transitions first, followed by the second most frequently used, and finally the third most frequently used.
Don’t Forget The Big Picture
Keep in mind that emphasis transitions are just one of the types of transitions you'll need to know for the SAT and ACT. Here are my current master lists for other categories:
