Use This Master List to Boost Your Test Score
Transition Questions are presented in a nearly identical manner on the digital SAT and ACT. Essentially, the strategies and tactics for solving them are the same. Thus, this master list and corresponding example sentences are valuable for both exams. Transition Questions are frequently encountered on the digital SAT, with approximately 3 or 4 per module.
Maximize Test Prep Efficiency
To help you get the most out of the hours you devote to exam preparation, I've categorized these essential example transitions into three sub-lists, based on their frequency of use. I recommend memorizing them by groups, in the order of most frequently to least frequently used.
The Importance of Memorizing Categories
As you study, bear in mind that the key to acing SAT and ACT Transition Questions is memorizing which transitions belong to which categories. Some students overly focus on small differences in meaning between different transitions. Especially at first, that is not the most important factor for improving your score. The number-one priority should be gaining clarity on the basic categories to which each transition belongs. Memorizing the general categories first is a more strategic approach.
Once you've learned the category lists, study the Walker Prep Transition Question Strategy Guide. Next, work on internalizing the strategies using my expertly-crafted Transition Question drills.
Of course, you should also practice with actual ACT and SAT exams. To explore Transition Questions on official tests, visit the Self Prep section. There, you'll find a Question Type Inventory (QTI) for the tests in the Official ACT Prep Guide and the Official Digital SAT Bluebook.
The Icing on the Cake
The explanations and examples below do specify some of the minor differences in usage and meaning between various transitions in the same general category. Once you’ve learned the tactics and gained a measure of mastery, you might want to delve deeper into these distinctions. Just keep in mind that this shouldn't be a top priority at first, since such granular knowledge is rarely necessary on the tests.
Don’t Forget The Big Picture
Keep in mind that emphasis transitions are just one of the types of transitions you'll need to know for the SAT and ACT. Here are my current master lists for other categories:
