Free SAT® Practice Question

The following text is from Jonathan Harlow's 1934 novel Streams of Consciousness:

"The narrative journey on which we're about to embark, though foisting upon us certain truths — whether uncomfortable ones I leave for the reader to decide, as our protagonist while by no means an insensitive artist was otherwise unexceptional by most all measures (though we mustn't forget a man can be one thing and his story, while admittedly forever his and no other's, something else) — is an extraordinary tale from the halcyon days of modernism, and consequently must be expressed in the fragmented and introspective language of that formative artistic period."

What does the text most strongly suggest about the protagonist's story?

A. Though stories of even the most ordinary artists can be enlightening because artistic sensibility is inherently noteworthy, the unconventional artistic values at the center of this tale make its significance difficult to fully appreciate.

B. Despite featuring a person of limited distinction, the fact that the story originates from modernism's early period and requires period-specific narrative techniques proves its historical importance.

C. As with most narratives concerning unremarkable figures from significant artistic movements, this tale must be told in that movement's own idiom for its relevance to be fully grasped by modern readers.

D. It contains noteworthy elements despite centering on an unremarkable person, although one could reasonably posit that because the story is notable, its central figure shares a portion of that status.
