The Score, Issue #17: The Lightbulb Moment
Flipping the Switch and Harnessing the Power of Insight in ACT and SAT Test Prep
Greetings, Quiz Hackers, and welcome to another issue of The Score!
If you're a regular reader of The Score, you already know how much I stress the importance of living by the Quiz Hacker official slogan: “Prep Smarter.” Today, we are going to delve into a pivotal part of smarter prep—the ‘light bulb’ moment.
What “Prep Smarter” Truly Means
“Prep Smarter” primarily means:
Carefully studying general strategies and specific question type tactics
Utilizing deliberate practice techniques for internalizing these strategies and tactics
Analyzing your performance on practice material using HLTA, skimming, and other methods that I cover extensively on Quiz Hacker.
This philosophy is a departure from the ineffective “mindless grinding” approach and avoids the pitfalls of the seductive “tips and tricks” promises made by some test prep resources.
Achieving Real Gains
I won’t deceive you: there’s no such thing as ‘something for nothing.’ Success necessitates both hard work and smart work. But, as my students’ reviews reflect, it’s not necessarily as taxing as you might think. Many have significantly increased their scores in a surprisingly short period. Why is that? Let’s flip the switch and find out.
The Power of the ‘Light Bulb Moment’
In many cases, students possess fundamental misconceptions about the ACT and SAT. The transformative instant when they grasp the actual mechanics of these tests is akin to a light bulb illuminating a dark room. Suddenly, what was once inscrutable becomes crystal clear. As a result, their entire approach changes in a rapid chain reaction.
Not So Fast! From Reading to Reality
The ‘light bulb’ rarely turns on merely by reading about HLTA or question type tactics. The magic occurs when students apply these strategies and tactics in the context of actual test questions and quality drills. For example, understanding that answers to Reading questions are in the passage is different from actually finding those answers in the passage text yourself and discerning how the correct answer choices are simply paraphrased from the passage.
Practice and Analysis: The Dynamic Duo
Studying is a critical starting point, but the zenith of growth happens when strategies are applied in practice and reflected upon. This can lead to substantial score gains, sometimes after just a few practice sessions. I’ve seen it hundreds of times, as my reviews attest.
