Think of SAT® Words in Context Questions as a dartboard challenge where only a bullseye counts. Unlike “horseshoes or hand-grenades” where close might count for something, the SAT® rewards only precision.

The College Board usually designs these questions with one perfect bullseye answer surrounded by one or two "close but not quite" options that land in the outer rings of the dartboard. These tempting near-misses might be related to the correct answer or sound sophisticated, but on the SAT®, being in the vicinity of the right answer is worth exactly as much as being completely wrong – nothing.

Unfortunately, many students don't even look for the dartboard's bullseye. Instead of carefully analyzing context clues, they just mentally plug in each option and go with the one that "flows" best – a dangerously subjective approach that plays right into the test makers' trap.

Mock Words in Context Question

The company’s commitment to sustainability was evident in its decision to ______ any partnerships with suppliers who opted not to adhere to strict environmental standards. This decisive move was followed by a public declaration severing all ties with those who failed to meet the company’s ethical criteria.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

A. epitomize

B. renounce

C. diminish

D. abate

(Answer Explanations and Strategy Guide Below.)

🔍 QUICK TIP: Remove your blindfold by identifying the precise target using context clues. The phrases "decisive move" and "severing all ties" reveal exactly what you're aiming for. Only one answer hits this exact target. Some others land in the outer rings, while one is way off the mark.
