Deep-sea bioluminescent algae are at risk in oceanic upwelling zones because these organisms require enough water movement to facilitate nutrient supply but not so much turbulence that they risk cellular damage. Researchers Maya Chen and David Rodriguez observed that several species of Pyrocystis fusiformis, a type of bioluminescent algae, appeared to thrive in naturally occurring mucilage formations—sticky, gel-like substances produced by various marine organisms. To evaluate whether these semi-solid environments benefited the algae, the researchers compared the cell density, a measure of organism abundance, of P. fusiformis when growing in open water versus when the algae was growing within mucilage formations. They found that the cell density was 57% higher for algae growing in mucilage as compared to algae in open water, suggesting that _____

Which choice most logically completes the text?

A) P. fusiformis is one of the few types of bioluminescent algae that can survive within mucilage formations.

B) mucilage formations do not provide the necessary nutrient circulation for P. fusiformis growth.

C) P. fusiformis growing within mucilage formations are subjected to turbulence at lower intensities and are thus better able to maintain cellular viability.

D) mucilage formations are capable of supporting P. fusiformis growth if the mucilage is not too dense.
