SAT® Command of Evidence Practice Question

As video games have become increasingly complex and socially oriented, traditional dedicated practice has declined in favor of what gaming researchers call "passive skill development" (PSD), where players rely primarily on casual group play and automated tutorials to improve their abilities. Researchers Park and Rodriguez studied data from competitive gaming leagues to analyze participants' PSD attitudes, mechanical skill levels, and competitive drive. Although no major tournaments occurred during their study period, preventing direct analysis of PSD's impact on tournament performance, Park and Rodriguez posited that PSD might reduce tournament success through an intermediate effect.

Which finding, if true, would most directly support the idea advanced by Park and Rodriguez?

A) PSD attitudes tend to increase as major tournaments approach, and players are significantly more likely to enter major tournaments than minor competitions.

B) PSD has a strong negative impact on mechanical skill and competitive drive, and there is known to be a strong positive correlation between these factors and tournament success.

C) Competitive drive is known to strongly influence tournament success but shows only a weak positive effect on mechanical skill, and PSD shows little correlation with either mechanical skill or competitive drive.

D) Tournament success increases with higher mechanical skill levels, and levels of PSD and mechanical skill tend to become more strongly correlated as players' social gaming networks expand.
