BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE: This passage is adapted from the book Symbiosis: Unraveling the Complex Bonds of Nature by Clara Richmond (©2023 by Clara Richmond).
Marine environments are teeming with relationships between different organisms, striking a delicate balance to maintain the health of the ecosystem. Coral polyps have a unique bond with zooxanthellae, a type of algae. There are also neutral relationships, where organisms share a space without affecting one another; for instance, some barnacles on a whale's skin don't harm or benefit their host. But the connection between “cleaner fish” (fish that remove and eat parasites and dead skin from other fish) and larger fish is an epitome of mutual symbiosis. "Large fish, like other animals, suffer from parasites," remarked marine biologist Dr. Alison Torres. "And in nature, they've found allies in cleaner fish."
Most marine species, it's believed, have at some point utilized the services of cleaner fish. It’s a wonder of marine life: cleaner fish consume the parasites and dead skin off larger fish, benefiting from a rich food source. In return, the larger fish get a 'cleaning' service, ensuring better health and longevity. The cleaner fish benefit from a continuous food source, and the larger fish reduce the risk of diseases. Without the cleaner fish, many species of fish would struggle with parasite loads.
