Some modern philosophers argue that artistic value is determined solely by the inherent qualities of the artwork itself, regardless of its historical context or the artist's intentions. In his recent book on ancient Greek aesthetics, Professor Elmore Kern posits that Athenian philosophers held a substantially different view. Kern contends that surviving Greek texts suggest artistic works were evaluated primarily based on how well they represented moral virtues and how effectively they educated citizens about civic duties.
