The Clear Creek Restoration Project was implemented in southern Colorado in 2000, following decades of agricultural overuse that had severely degraded the natural ecosystem. Botanist Dr. James Chen and colleagues monitored changes to the valley floor vegetation near the restored stream, including how much wildflower and shrub coverage were present. They concluded that the restoration changed the soil moisture patterns in ways that helped wildflower species to thrive but hindered the establishment of woody shrubs.

Which choice best describes data from the graph that support Chen and colleagues' conclusion?

A) The lowest amount of wildflower coverage was approximately 55,000 square meters, and the highest amount of shrub coverage was approximately 70,000 square meters.

B) There was more wildflower coverage than shrub coverage in 1995, and this difference increased dramatically in 2001 and again in 2014.

C) There was less wildflower coverage than exposed rock in 1995 but more wildflower coverage than exposed rock in 2001 and 2014, whereas there was more shrub coverage than exposed rock in all three years.

D) Wildflower coverage increased from 1995 to 2001 and from 2001 to 2014, whereas shrub coverage decreased over those periods.
