Command of Evidence Practice Question

In the dense forests of Madagascar, the orchids Angraecum sesquipedale and Aeranthes arachnitis, both native to the region, flourish in low-light conditions under the dense canopy. Botanists Nina Patel and Marcus Yeo conducted a study analyzing the photosynthetic process of these orchids. They found that the leaves of A. sesquipedale and A. arachnitis have a rare pigment composition, which, when elevated to high levels, helps them absorb light more efficiently in dim conditions. After extensive study, the researchers hypothesized that these orchids rely on this specialized pigment composition for dual purposes: to maximize photosynthesis in low-light conditions and to provide a natural antifungal defense.
