ACT Science and the Illusion of Choice: Why Opting Out May Limit Your Options
ACT Science is going optional, but don't celebrate just yet. Here's what you need to know.
In spring 2025, the ACT is making a big change: the Science section will become optional. But before you breathe a sigh of relief, a word of caution:
Is this really good news for your college-bound student?
The truth? Probably not. Here's why:
You shouldn’t assume that "optional" means unnecessary. As with "test-optional" colleges, students who submit scores may well have a significant edge.
Some colleges and/or majors may still want to see Science section scores from their ACT applicants. Make sure to do your research before deciding to take a shortcut around the Science section.
Last-minute college decisions happen. Having a Science score available will help you keep your options open.
The ACT's decision to make Science optional likely reflects market pressures as much or more than students' best interests. The Science section has long been a dreaded boogeyman among test takers, pushing many toward the SAT.
But here's the good news: ACT Science isn't as scary as it seems.
Just ask Julie, one of my former students:
"Dave is an excellent tutor. After 13 sessions, my scores increased dramatically: Composite: +4, English: +4, Reading: +4, Science: +7. With his help, I can now apply to Air Force ROTC with a great chance of getting a scholarship and I'm eligible for the Bright Futures Scholarship in my state!"
In my 10 years as an expert test prep tutor, I've helped hundreds of students conquer their ACT Science fears and dramatically improve their scores. Your child could be next.
My advice? Don't let this "optional" change limit your child's potential. Invest in comprehensive ACT prep that includes Science. It will provide you with more options. And it could make the difference between a merely good application and a great one.

Remember, in college admissions, it's not about taking the easy way out. It's about standing out. Make sure your child does.
